As restrictions ease and Spring arrives, fingers crossed we will be able to start delivering some outdoor adventures in the English Lake District and nearby Pennines. Covid restrictions will apply and where changes occur or new ones are put in place, then we shall adapt our activities accordingly. All our courses will be as ‘Covid secure’ as it is possible to make them. Our procedures are available to view on the Covid page on the website and please ask if you have any questions or concerns.
We are looking forward to offering a range of adventure days and courses throughout the Spring and Summer season. I have highlighted a few of these below although it is by no means a definitive list. We believe it would not be appropriate under the current Covid climate to run open courses and as such we will only run privately tailored courses. We are also operating a ratio of no more than five per group, with one guide, in order to comply with current guidelines of a maximum group of six operating outside.
Lakeland Guided Hillwalking and Scrambling:
The Lakes offer a huge wealth of hillwalking and scrambles. Aside from Scafell, the highest mountain in England, we offer guided walks up a variety of routes going from easier walks to scrambles to gain the highest summit in England. There are many great fells and ridges across Cumbria, such as the iconic Striding and Swirral Edges on Helvellyn. Bowfell and Great Gable, along with many other hills throughout the park, offer great adventure days. Our days are guided journeys with experienced qualified leaders and instructors, who combine an intricate knowledge of the area and mountains with qualified skills and experience. A moderate level of walking fitness is sufficient to have a great day in the fells. Trips can be tailored towards those who may wish to have a more adventurous day, with some roped scrambling to gain a summit, or they can be kept to gentler walks where views, photography and just an enjoyment of the mountain environment are the goals. Days can be pre booked or arranged the day before. Typically, once you have made a booking, we would discuss your objective in advance and then on the appointed date, meet at an appropriate car park and head out to enjoy the planned day, with all safety equipment provided.
Taster rock climbing sessions:
These days are designed for those who would like to have a go at rock climbing and to simply experience the sport in a wonderful setting. We usually climb in either the Borrowdale Valley, near Keswick, or the very scenic Langdale valley near Ambleside. We have a wide variety of venues to suit adults and children of all abilities. These sessions are an ideal way to "test the water" and see if perhaps this could be a sport to pursue - so why not try a few climbs and see how you feel? We can also provide an abseil as part of the day, what goes up must come down!
Family Adventure Days:
These days involve an exciting mix of fun and adventure for all. A climb, abseil, walk and scramble within the park mixed up to give everyone a chance to do something in some of the stunning Lakeland National Park. Abseil into an old slate quarry, walk in a beautiful valley, scramble up high to reach a peak with stunning views and follow this with a swim in a highland tarn (lake). We will discuss all the options with you to ensure a mix that suits all of the members of the family. All equipment and safety gear is provided.
Cross Fell, The Pennines:
Often overshadowed by the draw of the Lake District are the Pennines, which offer a remote and wild terrain along the ‘spine of England’. Cross Fell is the highest mountain in the Pennine Hills of Northern England and the highest point in England outside the Lake District National Park. It is located in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It lies within the county of Cumbria and the historic county boundaries of Cumberland. It is a summit which gives huge views across the Pennines and across to the Lake District. Our guided walks on the Pennines give a great day out especially when staying in the Eden Valley, and the perfect way to escape the crowds in the central lakes. Other areas such as High Cup Nick and Black doors offer some stunning scenery and good mountain journeys.
Mountain training:
These are a range of more specialised courses catering for those who are wishing to get into either hill walking or scrambling as independent climbers and hill walkers. For more details on the range of courses on offer then take a look at our dedicated mountain training page. Rock climbing, Hillwalking and Scrambling are the main focus with skilled qualified instruction to help you to develop the skills to head onto the crags and mountains to operate independently and safely.
